Arts & Artists Outdoors (A2O) is an artist residency program sponsored by The Philadelphia Department of Parks & Rec and the Mural Arts Program.

In the spring of 2013, I had the pleasure of working as an A2O artist at the Hawthorne Rec Center in South Philly with a group of kids, ages 10 to 14.   Over the course of 8 weeks, our environmental art class focused on creating a dialogue about what is needed for a better environment.  We created recycled Japanese windchimes (furin) using decoupaged recycled plastic bottle tops and block printed chime flags.  The windchimes were hung in both a temporary outdoor and permanent indoor installation, which were located at Hawthorne.  Wishes for a better earth were collected from the community and written on the windchimes.
